Crime Prevention Advice for Farmers and Landowners

With agricultural thefts appearing to increase, rural communities are encouraged to:

Secure gates with quality anti-cropper padlocks and hardened chains.

Consider earth bunds, barriers or additional fencing to restrict vehicle access.

Store trailers out of sight where possible and fit wheel clamps, hitch locks and forensic marking.

Record serial numbers and photograph valuable equipment.

Install and maintain CCTV, security lighting and movement alarms.

Mark trailers, machinery and tools with postcode and farm name.

Report any suspicious activity, particularly vehicles seen late at night or in isolated rural locations.

Join local Farm Watch, Rural Watch and community messaging schemes to share information quickly.

Criminals often rely on rural locations being quiet and unattended. Prompt reporting of suspicious vehicles, especially those towing trailers during the hours of darkness, can provide vital intelligence and help prevent further offences.
