Male arrested and charged.

You might have seen us on the A1 north-bound near Leeming Bar on the 11th August 2026 🚨

Officers from our Roads Policing Unit stopped a vehicle believed to be using cloned registration plates. 

With assistance from the Highways Agency who helped slow the traffic down, specially trained police officers brought the Volkswagen Golf to a safe stop in the outside lane before safely moving the vehicle and its occupant to the hard shoulder. 

The vehicle was believed to be stolen from another area and on searching the car, it was found to contain lots of other registration plates. These have been seized along with the vehicle. 

The driver and sole occupant of the car, a man in his 50s from County Durham, was subsequently arrested on suspicion of multiple offences.. He was later charged with driving while disqualified and driving with no insurance. The investigation into the vehicle theft and cloned number plates remains ongoing.
