Volunteer officer plays key role in York vehicle stop

On the evening of Saturday 8 August, shortly after 7pm, Special Constables working alongside the York Outer Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) on proactive patrols located and stopped a vehicle on Foss Islands Road that had reportedly been driven dangerously in York city centre.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving and has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

The vehicle was also seized after checks revealed it was being driven without insurance. A number of other offences remain under investigation.

Special Sergeant Harry Cornforth from North Yorkshire Police said: "Thanks to information provided by members of the public, we were able to quickly locate and stop this vehicle before anyone was seriously injured.

"As a volunteer Special Constable, it is incredibly rewarding to be able to help protect our communities and make a difference. We are currently recruiting Special Constables, and I would encourage anyone interested in policing and giving something back to their community to consider applying.”

Special Sergeant Cornforth is one of North Yorkshire Police's volunteer Special Constables. Special Constables are warranted police officers who volunteer their time to help keep communities safe, holding the same powers as regular police officers.

Working alongside police officers and staff, Specials play an important role in preventing and detecting crime, supporting victims, engaging with local communities and responding to incidents. They can be involved in a wide range of policing activities, from neighbourhood patrols and road safety operations to supporting major events and emergency incidents.
