Proactive patrols for road-related antisocial behaviour

Last week saw Ryedale and Scarborough’s Neighbourhood Policing Teams joining forces with local officers from Eastfield and Filey for a multi-pronged approach to tackle the reports of vehicular related anti-social behaviour across the area. 

As part of the tactical operation, officers engaged with residents and young people to give safety advice and information about the legalities of e-bikes, e-scooters and riding off-road bikes. 

Following community intelligence, several riders of e-scooters were issued with warning notices. 

The operation allowed us to focus on the information we have received, to be able to engage with those involved the use of e-scooters and involved in anti-social behaviour. We want to prevent offences from happening but more importantly, to keep people safe.

As it turned to dusk, the team moved to observe the routes into Scarborough. Speed detection officers used handheld devices along Seamer Road and Valley Road, whilst mobile patrols were conducted in hotspot locations. 

As patrols moved towards the seafront, the driver of a black Renault Clio caught the attention of the team, as he was not wearing his seatbelt. The vehicle was stopped on Marine Drive. Subsequent checks revealed that the driver was disqualified, he had no insurance and following a roadside breath test, he blew 65µm when the legal limit is 35µm. 

The driver, a 37-year-old man from Scunthorpe was arrested and has been charged to attend Scarborough Magistrates Court on Monday 17 August 26.
