As many residents prepare to go away on holiday over the summer, North Yorkshire Police would like to remind everyone to take a few simple steps to help protect their homes from burglars. Burglars often look for signs that a property is unoccupied. Before you leave, consider the following crime prevention advice: 🏡 Make your home look occupied Use timer switches on lights, radios, or lamps to create the impression that someone is home.Ask a trusted neighbour, friend, or family member to keep an eye on your property.Arrange for someone to move any post away from your letterbox and, if possible, open and close curtains occasionally. 🔒 Secure your property Ensure all doors and windows are locked before leaving, including upstairs windows and conservatories.Double-lock doors where applicable and remove keys from locks.Secure sheds, garages, and outbuildings, as these can contain valuable tools that could be used to gain entry to your home. 📱 Be cautious on social media Avoid posting holiday plans, travel details, or pictures of your trip while you are away.Consider sharing your holiday photos once you have returned home. 💡 Protect your valuables Keep valuable items out of sight from windows.Mark and register valuable property where possible.Consider installing a burglar alarm, CCTV, video doorbell, or security lighting if you do not already have them. 🚗 Vehicle security If leaving a vehicle at home, ensure it is locked and valuables are removed.Store car keys away from doors and windows and consider using a signal-blocking pouch for keyless vehicles. 👀 Report suspicious activity If you see suspicious behaviour in your neighbourhood, report it to North Yorkshire Police. In an emergency, always call 999. For non-emergencies, call 101 or report online via the North Yorkshire Police website.
