Rural Fuel Theft

With the rising cost of fuel—including heating oil, diesel, and petrol—the risk of fuel theft across rural areas is increasing.

We’re urging anyone who stores fuel on their property, whether for domestic or commercial use, to review their security arrangements. Simple measures such as installing security lighting, using CCTV, fitting secure tank locks, and carrying out regular checks can make a significant difference.

At home (heating oil):

Fit a tank lock and ensure the fill point is capped

Install security lighting and consider CCTV

Keep hedges and fencing maintained so tanks are visible

Mark tanks with your postcode or property name

Report suspicious activity promptly

On farms and at businesses (red diesel / fuel stores):

Store vehicles and bowsers in secure, well-lit areas

Lock compounds and gates, and restrict access

Regularly check and monitor tanks, recording fuel levels

Keep keys secure and change access codes when staff or contractors leave

Install alarms, anti-siphon devices, and CCTV where possible

Avoid publicising fuel deliveries and vary routines

If you notice any suspicious activity, please report it to the police via 101 or online. If you believe a crime is in progress, always call 999 immediately.
