🚲 North Yorkshire Police – Cycling Safety in York

As the number of cyclists using York’s roads, cycle paths, and shared spaces continues to grow, we’re reminding everyone to help keep our city safe by following essential cycling safety guidance.

🔦 Use Lights at All Times of Low Visibility

With darker mornings, evenings, and unpredictable weather, it’s vital that cyclists are clearly visible.

Front white lights and rear red lights are a legal requirement when cycling in the dark.

We strongly recommend using lights in poor weather or low daylight to ensure you can be seen by other road users.

Reflective clothing and accessories can further improve visibility.

🚦 Follow Road Traffic Signs and Signals

Cyclists must obey the same road signs and traffic lights as drivers.

Stop at red lights and pedestrian crossings.

Follow one-way systems and no-entry signs unless a cycle exemption is clearly displayed.

Use designated cycle lanes where provided and ride with care when sharing space with pedestrians.

🛣️ Share the Roads Responsibly

York’s roads are busy with pedestrians, buses, cars, and other cyclists.

Ride predictably and avoid weaving between vehicles.

Signal clearly before turning.

Keep to the left unless overtaking and give plenty of space to others.
