Gift card fraud alert - businesses in our area targeted 

We're warning businesses in North Yorkshire and York about a retail fraud relating to gift cards.

A few days ago a retailer in Harrogate received a call from someone claiming to be from their IT department. The caller manipulated a member of staff into activating gift cards, and passing the card details over the phone. The total loss to the business was around £4,000.

Our Economic Crime Unit are warning all retailers to be vigilant, particularly when it comes to unsolicited calls relating to gift cards, or callers claiming to be from within the same company. Always consider checking a phone call is genuine by recontacting the caller via a recognised number.
