Tadcaster has a knife amnesty bin as part of a North Yorkshire police initiative to tackle knife crime. The bin is a secure and anonymous way for people to dispose of bladed items without fear of prosecution for possession. The bin is located in Tadcaster, and similar bins have been installed in other towns across the county. Those wishing to deposit a knife are advised to wrap the blade in either thick paper or cardboard, and secure it with tape as a safety precaution. Once secure, take the knife directly to the bin location and deposit it safely by dropping it through the hatch. - We know it can be worrying to hear about people being injured or killed by knives but carrying a knife yourself doesn't make you any safer and can put you more at risk. A knife usually makes a situation much worse.
- The reality is that very few people carry knives but if someone you know is carrying a knife you can report it to the police, speak to a trusted family member or teacher, or you can report it anonymously to Crimestoppers.
- If there are areas where you live or spend time that don't feel safe you can report this on a website called StreetSafe. The information is given to your local police who can then look at what they can do to improve safety in that area.
