Scam DWP Text Message |

Good Afternoon Resident
On 26th October 2025, the clocks will go back. This is most definitely the obvious sign that winter is coming, along with the darker nights and colder weather. At this time of year, fraudsters/scammers will increase in their attempts to relieve you of your money AND information. Scammers are sending out messages, claiming to be from the Department of Work and Pensions, urging people to ‘apply’ for their Winter Fuel Payments. Some messages are indicating being able to receive £200-£300 as a household grant. There is usually a link in the message, indicating the requirement to click and submit details. This includes your personal data, with some scammers asking for ID such as driving licence, passport and a ‘selfie’ photograph. Sometimes, the scammer may also ask to transfer a small fee to ‘check’ that your payment card is working. The information and photograph enable the scammer to obtain loans and take debts in your name, amongst other fraudulent activity. You can protect yourself – Do not click the link or provide any personal or financial information. Report the message as ‘junk’ or ‘spam’ and delete the message immediately. Visit the legitimate Government website to find more information about the Winter Fuel Payment changes. If you think you have been scammed, contact your bank immediately. Call the number on the back of your debit/credit card.
Many Thanks,
Lorna,
